DIP’S vs SMD’S

As you may have heard – or not …… SMD’s are the leading technology for LED Displays now whether it is for indoor or outdoor LED Display / EMC Displays.

So make sure you don’t get stuck using a manufacturer who is using the old DIP technology and purchasing their leftover stock.

So you can understand the difference between the two, I will do my best to simplify the difference between the two, however, I do want to mention that, like all technology, what you may have heard just a few months ago, can change dramatically due to advances in this field. So be open to change – always!

So let’s get started…..

In the past, the rule of thumb has been – Outdoor LED Displays – use DIPS / Indoor LED Displays to use SMD’s, however that has now changed due to improved technology.

First, the basics: DIP LED stands for “Dual In-line Package” and got started being used in different technology since the early 1960s, and are now being used in just about every lighting situation pertaining to technology. As you can tell by the picture to your right, they are most recognized by the two pins that extend from the bottom of the LED.

And the SMD stands for “Surface-Mount Device”, and it is also known as SMT “Surface Mounted Technology”. As in almost all evolution, SMD’s came about due to devices becoming smaller and the need to be able to have this type of LED fit within the smaller technology. So with that said, the uses for SMDs have rapidly increased in the first decade of the 21st century.

“SMD chips allowed improved quality control and offer a product that features better heat dispersion, high lumen output (high lumen flux ) and longer overall life (low optical decay) than its predecessor the DIP LED.

Far from being outdated, SMD LED continues to improve in its lumens per watt output, these small, maintenance-free long-lasting solid-state light sources will be around for many years to come.” Per Aladdin

One of the biggest benefits is that compared with a DIP Display is that SMD’s displays do have the advantage of:

*  SMD’s are lightweight,

*  they have a much wider visual angle – which is 140°v  by 140°h

*  the colour output is much crisper and truer to the intended colour along with better colour uniformity

*  They are more energy efficient than the DIP

This lends itself to SMD’s having a much more natural look and feels of an image on an LED Display – being much less pixilated.

The best contribution that I feel the SMD has brought to the LED Display world is that now, you can get a much better looking LED display without having to pay as much for it. In other words, if you get a 16mm SMD Full Color Display – it will look much better than the 16mm DIP Full-Color Display.

As for the near horizon, another advantage of SMD’s is that they can be easily manufactured using efficient quantity mass production, which helps keep the costs down during production. This will obviously save on labour costs and LED Displays will be able to have a larger scale of production. While the prices are still a bit higher than the traditional DIP LED’s, the trend is already happening where the SMD displays are having a more competitive price.

Since this technology is considered outdated in my opinion, we do not offer DIPs in our K8 Line, KB Line, or our K5 Line any longer.
